President Ariel Guarco's message

We are starting a new year with a lot of challenges. To handle them, the first task is being aware of the size, trajectory and power of our movement. As we learnt from our latest Global Conference, we are more than 1.2 billion people around the world: one in every six people on the planet. This means that our movement can have an enormous influence on how to solve the most pressing issues faced by humanity.

We have reaffirmed our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals because we know the extent to which we can contribute. However, it is necessary to adopt integration as a premise so that this contribution is effective and noticeable at global level, and, at the same time, in every territory where there is a co-operative. International Co-operative Alliance welcomes Oxfam report urging support
for co-ops

The report ‘Reward Work, not Wealth’ published by Oxfam shows that global inequality widened last year, with wealth concentrated in the hands of a small minority. Oxfam wants our economies redesigned to make them more human and equal, and calls on governments, international institutions and corporations to reinvent the private sector guided by the DNA of co-operatives. Read more

 

Bruno Roelants appointed new Director-General
of the International
Co-operative Alliance

Mr Roelants will begin his new role in the coming weeks, succeeding Charles Gould who last year announced his decision to retire. Mr Roelants currently serves as Secretary General of CICOPA, the sectoral organisation of the International Co-operative Alliance for industry and services – a role he has held since 2002. Under his leadership, membership of the organisation has increased considerably. Read more

The year 2017 marked some notable moments for the global movement. The Alliance has been actively involved in increasing the profile of co-operatives in policy-making groups, which won recognition in reports from the UN and the B20. Below are some of the key stories from the past 12 months.

Co-ops report on SDGs implementation progress

Throughout 2017, co-operatives have continued to show their inherent commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The year was marked by a series of events, as well as studies by the International
Co-operative Alliance and the UN, focused on the role of co-ops in the implementation of the SDGs. Read more

B20 final recommendations recognise the specificity of the co-op business model

Three years on from its first participation in the Business 20 meetings, the global co-operative movement has obtained recognition of its specific business model. The B20’s final recommendations to the G20 governments, which were presented in May, contain several references to
co-operatives. Read more

Co-ops for 2030 approaching 300 pledges!

Throughout 2017, co-operatives have continued to show their commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals via the International Co-operative Alliance’s online platform www.Coopsfor2030.coop. Read more

 

Governance: a full new board elected

In November, the General Assembly
of the International Co-operative
Alliance elected a new board and president. Ariel Guarco from Argentina was elected with 671 votes out of a total of 691. He took over from Monique F. Leroux, who had led the organisation since 2015. Read more

The co-operative movement meets in Malaysia: #Coopconference17 highlights

A key event of 2017 was the Alliance’s Global Conference and General Assembly in Malaysia. Held in
November, it focused on the role of
co-ops in putting people at the centre of development. The conference offered hundreds of delegates the choice of 62 sessions with 60 speakers from across the world. Read more

 

World Co-operative Monitor confirms sector’s strength and analyses its activity

In November the Alliance, working with
Euricse, published its 6th annual World Co-operative Monitor. New this year is a trend analysis of the top co-operatives and mutuals by sector activity, as well as an analysis of the capital structure of the Top 300, and also a sample of smaller
co-operatives and mutuals. According to the monitor, the top 300 co-operatives and mutuals had a total turnover of USD 2,164.23 billion in 2015. Read more

Co-operatives account for 10% of the world’s employment

Based on data from 156 countries, the second global report on Co-operatives and Employment showed that
co-operatives employ 280 million people across the globe – 10% of the world’s working population. The report also examines the specific contributions of
co-operatives to addressing problems related to working conditions in the informal economy. Read more

Alliance increased membership in 2017

During the past 12 months the International Co-operative Alliance has welcomed 17 new members. As of 31 December 2017, there are 306 members from 105 countries, 46 of which are associate members. The organisation witnessed a 2.3% increase in membership, from 299 members
in 2016. Read more

Getting the co-op message out to the world is critical to growing our movement – and having .coop on board is one of the most valuable ways to do this. In 2017, the DotCoop team set out to raise awareness of the .coop domain and the benefits it brings to co-operatives which use it. Read more

Member focus: VICTO National

This month our featured member is VICTO National Cooperative Federation and Development Center (VICTO National) from the Philippines, which has been a member of the Alliance since 2010.

The centre’s roots date back to the early 1960s when Canadian missionaries known as the Scarboro Fathers arrived in Southern Leyte, pioneering the co-op business model. Later, in 1970, co-op leaders founded a small training centre, which became known as VICTO. The federation is also one of the 100 co-operative bodies to make pledges via the Alliance’s Coopsfor2030 platform.
