January 2018 We are starting a new year with a lot of challenges. To handle them, the first task is being aware of the size, trajectory and power of our movement. As we learnt from our latest Global Conference, we are more than 1.2 billion people around the world: one in every six people on the planet. This means that our movement can have an enormous influence on how to solve the most pressing issues faced by humanity. We have reaffirmed our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals because we know the extent to which we can contribute. However, it is necessary to adopt integration as a premise so that this contribution is effective and noticeable at global level, and, at the same time, in every territory where there is a co-operative. The year 2017 marked some notable moments for the global movement. The Alliance has been actively involved in increasing the profile of co-operatives in policy-making groups, which won recognition in reports from the UN and the B20. Below are some of the key stories from the past 12 months. Co-ops report on SDGs implementation progressThroughout 2017, co-operatives have continued to show their inherent commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The year was marked by a series of events, as well as studies by the International B20 final recommendations recognise the specificity of the co-op business modelThree years on from its first participation in the Business 20 meetings, the global co-operative movement has obtained recognition of its specific business model. The B20’s final recommendations to the G20 governments, which were presented in May, contain several references to Co-ops for 2030 approaching 300 pledges!Throughout 2017, co-operatives have continued to show their commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals via the International Co-operative Alliance’s online platform www.Coopsfor2030.coop. Held in World Co-operative Monitor confirms sector’s strength and analyses its activityIn November the Alliance, working with Co-operatives account for 10% of the world’s employmentBased on data from 156 countries, the second global report on Co-operatives and Employment showed that Alliance increased membership in 2017During the past 12 months the International Co-operative Alliance has welcomed 17 new members. As of 31 December 2017, there are 306 members from 105 countries, 46 of which are associate members. The organisation witnessed a 2.3% increase in membership, from 299 members Showing our difference: 8,000 .coop domains and over 100 countries using the Co-operative MarqueGetting the co-op message out to the world is critical to growing our movement – and having .coop on board is one of the most valuable ways to do this. This month our featured member is VICTO National Cooperative Federation and Development Center (VICTO National) from the Philippines, which has been a member of the Alliance since 2010. The centre’s roots date back to the early 1960s when Canadian missionaries known as the Scarboro Fathers arrived in Southern Leyte, pioneering the co-op business model. Later, in 1970, co-op leaders founded a small training centre, which became known as VICTO. The federation is also one of the 100 co-operative bodies to make pledges via the Alliance’s Coopsfor2030 platform. Videos |
